I understand the importance of exercise, eating healthy organic foods, and searching for advice on how to “dress for success.” I, too, get caught up in the next marketing fad that promises the postponement or reduction of “looking old.” I sometimes envy the model whose flawlessness I long to aspire.
Yet, I wonder, what happens as we continue on life’s journey if we only focus on molding our physiques; constantly seeking perfection? Not too much. Often, we are left with a shell of a body.
So, I also am very aware that there is more to chisel away than just the outer layer of our bodies. We need to chisel within. We need to look deep at the other layers that make us who we are. We have to scrape away fears, phobias, prejudices, and habits that prevent us from learning about ourselves; how we can personally improve, prosper, and help others. We have to chip away at the rough edges of our personalities, our inner intolerances to individually grow and develop. And that isn’t easy. It is sometimes painful.
But in order to cultivate the gem in us, we have to seek strategies and resources that continue to mold us into the person we are becoming. We have to whittle away at our flaws (not to be flawless) so we can be beacons of light; so that we be the best person in a relationship, so that we can attract the career we need to pursue, so that we can use retirement as a vehicle of expression instead of retreating from life in all its zest and adventure.
We all want to be “glittering” diamonds but often we resist being cut to get to the jewel in us. I say, give yourself permission to chisel away at the things that are holding you back. Instead of resistance, challenge yourself to accept the things you cannot change but consider the things that you CAN change and those actions, thoughts, words that will transform people around you. Have the courage to use your strengths and skills to confront personal change.
And, if you are seeking advice or ways to effectively mold your inner self into what you are to become, I can help you. Together, we can carefully cut away at the rough edges and discover the real you.
It can be an exciting time to chip away. You never know what you may uncover!
